How to Style Food with Basic Kitchen Items

When you only have basic kitchen tools on hand, you have to inevitably choose the ‘less is more” strategy.

If you’re a budding food blogger in your city, you don’t need to spend a million bucks on expensive cutlery and crockery for adding props to your food shoots.

We’re showing you how to style food with fewer props.

The most important step in food photography is to make sure your food has layers and textures that show on camera. If its a piece of cake, display a cut. If its a salad, show the way you tossed it. Spend hours if you want but ensure the dish you cooked looks great. If you’re a novice, add ample garnishes to complete the dish.

When it comes to cake stands, use a neutral cake stand that doesn’t compete with the food or dominate the scene and you can always use it in different shots without looking repetitive.

Use plain white ramekins for holding garnishes and sauces near your dish. They look minimalistic and don’t distract the eye from the main subject: the food you painstakingly prepared!

Don’t forget other accessories that can bring more life to your photographs. Your wooden spoons, ladles, whisks, knives, baking trays, cake pans can all add some visual interest to your photos. Don’t worry if they look worn – that adds character!

By inverting a baking sheet, you get a neutral dark background that lets your food shine. Sheet pans provide a good background for top-down ingredient shots because they offer texture and character.

You can even use your wooden cutting board for a natural and organic feel. However, ensure that the cutting board is not stained as such details are fairly noticeable.

You don’t need a huge prop collection of the most expensive pieces to make beautiful food photography.
